He stood behind her, his arms reaching around to adjust the bell of the Victrola. "You must be careful of the needle. We don't want you to get a nasty prick now, do we?"

She grinned like a fool, biting her lip. He heard the thought and tutted at her, his breath warm against her ear.

"Really, Fiona. You're insufferable. Now, wind the mainspring." Both their hands rested on the hand crank, his gauging how far she could go.

"Careful, not too tight. There. Place the platter thus." His fingertips rest on her wrists, guiding her as she set the gleaming black disc on the turn table.

"And now, after you take the brake off, you set the needle in the groove." That required him leaning forward a bit more, closing the distance between them. His mouth brushed the nape of her neck, pressing a warm kiss to her skin as he turned the head of the stylus down.

The sound that came out of the bell was rich and warm, unmarred by scratches and pops. Jazz horns filled the air of his study, followed by a smoky voice singing in German.

In that moment, everything seemed tinged with gold, as if time itself had passed them by. She closed her eyes and let her head fall back against his shoulder. He wrapped her up in his arms, burying his nose in her hair, a quiet contented hum in the back of his throat.

Together, they swayed in time to the music, watching the disc spin round and round.   And when the song was over, he leaned forward and moved the needle back to the beginning.

The credits on the DVD looped again. He watched the names scroll by, idly stroking her hair. Her hand clenched on his shirt front, and she made a soft, contented sound.

"You want me to tuck you in?"

She shook her head, not even bothering to lift her head from his chest.

He laughed, a low rumble, wrapping both long arms around her, holding her close. He took a deep breath, and let it out in a long sigh.

"Too old to sleep in a chair," he said.

"Accountants never sleep," she murmured, nestling closer.

She knows him too well, he thinks.

What sexuality is your pup (are your pups) and is it canon or not? Be as detailed or sparse as you like!

The Baron Munchausen
: "Beautiful ladies!"  Canon answers this question neatly.  He woos them and leaves them wanting though.  We shall call him flirtysexual.

Barking Mad Wednesday (OC):  The Captain enjoys the company of men, but rarely indulges.  She commands a ship of forty men, and fraternisation is discouraged.  It never ends well, and any crewman caught fraternising will be lucky to make it back to port before she shifts them overboard.  That said, she has nothing against time spent in the company of women.  Mostly, she enjoys sex, when she can.  And she's not one to let gender stand in the way of getting what she wants.

Gilbert is hopeless, mostly.  He's lucky to get a woman to look at him, much less a man.  His dalliance with Fields still leaves him feeling a  bit like he's stolen someone else's life, and they'll be back any minute to claim it.

Khephera is another for whom gender is secondary, and the attraction is primary.  If she became involved with a woman, it wouldn't cause her any great consternation.

John Dillinger Straight as an arrow, in public spaces.  Behind closed doors, well, that has yet to be explored.

Danny Ocean Likes pretty girls who make him laugh.  Straight as the day is long.

Don Draper likes women who refuse to be tamed.  (One can only assume that Betty was fierce as the day is long before he married her.  Which broke his attraction to her, but I still think he cares about her.) Hopelessly straight.

Roger "Verbal" Kint is asexual.  Sex is something that makes things complicated, gets in the way of doing business.  If he ever felt attracted to someone, that could quite possibly be dangerous for the person he's attracted to.  Any emotion is to be ruthlessly suppressed.

My username is: [livejournal.com profile] mmexlibris , the LJ I created for Mixed Muses, and kind of my home away from home.

My journal name is: Smoke & Mirrors, a writer's palette.

My title is:  Ex Libris, Ignis. Bastardised Latin. From (words/books), fire. Words being the creative ignition point for entire worlds. Shiva dances the Nataraja and carries in his left hand the Fire of destruction, and he is surrounded by the flames of the manifest Universe.  Also?  I like fire.  (Really I could write volumes on this.  Words as pearls of fire (ideas) strung into stories that have the power to alter reality.  Fire as a cleansing healing power.  The primitive power of firelight to bind humans together for story time, the beating heart of our humanity.)

My subtitle is:  Let it burn, baby, let it burn.

My friends page is called:  My friend's page is untitled.  I should fix this.  Suggestions?

My default userpic is:
You can't see the flames on the side of it. To borrow a line from Stitch's canon, I took the red one.

Ask a character a question, any question, and they HAVE to answer completely honestly. Have to. It's the meme rule. Even if they'd normally lie, they suddenly have been hit with a truth serum of some kind and must tell the truth. Bwaha.

Pup list is here.

From [livejournal.com profile] wordsthatfail :

Reply to this meme by yelling "Words!" and I will give you five words that remind me of you. Then post them in your LJ and explain what they mean to you.

Burn Notice: Crazy good looking spies have fun blowing things up and helping innocent people get some back.  I realised awhile back why I love this show so much (Jeffrey Donnovan, Gabrielle Anwar, Sharon Gless, & Bruce Campbell notwithstanding).  It's basically The A-Team set in Miami.  It's bad guys on the run from the Government (or vague nebulous threat of the week) helping the little guy on the way.  Along with the ubiquitous process montage.  (The Pretender also falls into this category for me.)  Oh show.  I love you so.

writing: Oh pick an easy one, why don'tcha.  Writing is my life's blood.  It has often been said that I am a drinker with a writing problem.  I have always written, I always will write.  It's not something I do, it's who I am.  Choosing the right word to express a particular moment, a specific emotion, a span of heart beats, is absolutely essential to me.  I have no patience for people who do not take the time to craft their words.  Language is the most powerful tool we have for interacting with other people.  Language is magic.  It creates worlds, it brings characters to life, it defines us in ways we cannot even begin to understand.  When I put pen to paper (or pixels to page, perhaps), I seek to create magic.  I want to take you on a journey, transport you, make your world better for having taken the time to read.

Taken: This is an interesting one, and one that I perhaps take a little too seriously.  If you know me at all, you know that my husband is a fire arms instructor as well as a self-defense instructor.  He's worked in Executive Protection.  So this film has a lot of specialised knowledge around it that I had already been exposed to outside of the theatre.  Several of our friends called after having seen the film to say, "Does Wolf know they made a movie about him?"  There are several concepts that this character is founded on that are very much a part of who he is.  Improvise, adapt, overcome.  Always cheat, always win.  (There are, of course, things in the film that he would never do.  But a person's toolkit is only as limited as their own will to accomplish the mission.)  So yeah -- I wanted a character to explore that mindset, why he does what he does.  I've learned a lot and it's generated a ton of really interesting conversation.  (I love rp.)

The Gecko (yes, that one *g*):  What do you want to know about the Gecko?  He's crack, pure and simple.  He's a jaded ex-stage actor sucked into doing commercials for auto insurance.  He knows about the seedy underbelly of Hollywood and has almost been stepped on by some of its greatest talent.  Whatever you do, don't get between a lizard and his martini.  You saw what happened to Billy Mays ~hands up~ I'm just sayin'.

music: Gah,  ok.  This one could be a freakin' dissertation.  I have a degree in music, emphasis on conducting.  It means I play most instruments, but none of them really well.  I didn't discover I could sing until my senior year, and by that time, I was burned out on academia.  I will listen to anything once, and have wildly eclectic tastes.  As long as it's interesting, I'll probably listen to it.  I love World Beat and particularly Middle Eastern music.  I've had some amazing performance experiences, both as a vocalist and an instrumentalist.  I think music is the one truly universal language, and I think if it played a more important part in our culture and day to day life, I think we, as a species, could overcome some of our darkest instincts and truly learn to accept and indulge the piece of divinity that exists in every single one of us.  (How's that for a high falutin' opinion, hmm?)

So who wants words?

TELL ME THE FOLLOWING ABOUT YOUR CHARACTERS:
→ why I decided to play this character
→ my favorite scene or bit of interaction concerning this character to date
→ my favorite original aspect about this character
→ the last thing they did "off screen"
→ what their last words would be if they died tomorrow
→ what the next thing I'm doing for them is (narrative, post, shelving, whatever)

BONUS ROUND:
» I will tell you what character of yours I'd like to play mine against
» you may ask me a free question ♥

why I decided to play this character: I originally wanted to try my hand at strong female characters.  Fiona struck me as an incredibly self sufficient, intelligent, clever, cat with nine lives type character.  She's loyal (to the point of stupidity), she's fierce and she's more than a bit mad.

→ my favorite scene or bit of interaction concerning this character to date: Gah too many to pick from.  For the G-Rated, it would have to be meeting Indiana Jones the first time.  For the not-so-G-Rated, it would have to be meeting Ramon and the subsequent near miss encounter.

→ my favorite original aspect about this character:  Her flat. It's very much her space in my head.

→ the last thing they did "off screen" : Milliways has not exactly been a stabilizing force on Fiona's life.  Too much trouble to get into. I think perhaps the last thing she did off screen was probably not suitable for prime time.

→ what their last words would be if they died tomorrow "Bloody hell that hurts."

→ what the next thing I'm doing for them is (narrative, post, shelving, whatever) Well, there's a Michael in the bar now, and even though he's way behind her in canon, there should be many fun times ahead.  Especially seeing as Ramon-mun and Michael-mun are the same person.  ~evil laugh~

Everyone has things they blog about. Everyone has things they don't blog about. Challenge me out of my comfort zone by telling me something I don't blog about, but you'd like to hear about, and I'll write a post about it probably make a big ol' comment about it, unless it's so big that I have to write a post. Ask for anything: latest movie watched, last book read, political leanings, thoughts on slash, favorite type of underwear, graphic techniques, etc. Repost in your own journal so that we can all learn more about each other.

And?  New pup.  Okay, old pup, but new LJ.

1.  I love crab and I love avocado, but together, they're the perfect food.

2. I collect ways to start fires that don't involve matches.  I don't have a fire piston yet, but I want one.

3. I have a weakness for scientific prints from the late 19th and earlier.  This includes, but is not limited to, naturalists lithographs, anything to do with taxonomies, insects, birds, sea shells, cephalopods, fish, anatomy, yeah I'll stop.

4. I love live music.  Jazz, nuevo flamenco, blues, bluegrass, hell, if there's a mariachi band playing, I'll stop for margaritas.  I hate the lone folk singer who thinks he knows the song better than John Lennon or Bob Dylan did.  I mean, really?  Really?  But 9 times out of 10, I will put money in the hat of a busker.

5. I love drinking chai in a café on the street or eating breakfast at the counter in a restaurant.  It's a prime people watching spot.

6. I hate the term 'liberal'.  I much prefer 'progressive'.

7. Why do I even care about #6?  Because I believe that language matters.  I believe that each word you choose reflects a specific meaning, a particular connotation in the overall context, and I don't believe in letting the opposition defining the terms of the argument.

8. I think torture is wrong.  Always.

9. I have two tattoos.  I want more.  The money I was saving up for one, probably going to be used to pay the dentist now.  @$%&#!

10. I knit.  Not well, but I do.

I should do this for the pups, too.

2. Put it on shuffle.

4. For the first question, type the song that’s playing.
5. When you go to a new question, press the next button TWICE.
6. Don’t lie and try to pretend you’re cool... just type it in, man!

Think of 15 albums that had such a profound effect on you they changed your life or the way you looked at it. They sucked you in and took you over for days, weeks, months, years. These are the albums that you can use to identify time, places, people, emotions. These are the albums that no matter what they were thought of musically shaped your world.

Tag others if you want - I won't be hurt if you don't care to participate.
1. Live - Throwing Copper: I bought this album when I heard the very first track off it. It went on to throw four more up the charts, and it continues to be a go to for me. I love this album. Loudly.
2. David Bowie - Best of Bowie: This is less a coherent album than an eclectic collection of songs, from Ziggy Stardust through to the late '90's. Ashes to Ashes is my 'you get one song to take with you to the deserted island' song. Space Oddity, Heroes, Golden Years all are a heavy influence on my personal sense of story.
3. Dire Straits - Brothers In Arms: This album pretty much defined an entire summer. It was an era, for better or for worse.
4. Yes - The Yes Album: This one lived in my cassette deck for the two summers I was driving back and forth to Jalama Beach. It was just the perfect length to get one whole cycle in. I obsess over the strangest things, and this is one of them. Love this album.
5. The Shins - Wincing The Night Away: This is 2008's version of The Yes Album for me. It takes my breath away.
6. Paul Simon - Graceland: This one has lived in my CD case/iPod for as long as I can remember. It's one of those that if I don't have it, I miss it. There's a sense of childlike joy and wonder in some of these songs that I never want to lose. Also, story. Did I mention story?
7. Peter Gabriel - Passion & Passion Sources: I really shouldn't have to explain why I love these two. I kinda want to be Peter Gabriel when I grow up.
8. Peter Gabriel - So: This is another one of those albums that lives in my iPod and when it's gone I miss it horribly. Don't Give Up, Mercy Street, Red Rain, and In Your Eyes are more of those epic stories in a song that I adore.
9. Portishead - Roseland NYC Live: This is one of those touch stone albums for me. It reminds me of a good friend who I miss. It's only one of the things that he gave me that made me a better person. Plus, damn good music.
10. Afro Celt Sound System: Vol. 3 Further In Time: Again, when you hear this, if you know me at all, you'll go, "OH OF COURSE."
11. Eagles - Hell Freezes Over: As much as I love Hotel California, this is my Eagles album. And I hate live albums.
12. Crosby, Stills & Nash - Daylight Again: Another one of those, when I need it, I need it NOW albums.
13. Gogol Bordello - Super Taranta!: Oh gypsy punk. Where have you been all my life?
14. Holst's The Planets: What? It's an album. Of a sort.
15. Classic Queen (Red & Blue): Again, lives in my CD Case. I need it on my iPod. Why is there no Queen on my iPod!? This is just wrong and must be remedied post haste.
++. Genre=Blues: This is a massive folder on my iPod that I am constantly rifling through and adding to. It contains everything from the earliest Delta Blues to the Chicago scene, from Robert Johnson and Muddy Waters, through Lady Day and John Lee Hooker, spilling out into James Brown, Etta James, Nina Simone, Janis Joplin, Van Morrison, etc. I love the stories, again.
